Kylo 1.1.1 for Windows is released!

Version 1.1.1 is a bugfix release.

With 1.1.0, some issues were introduced related to how plugins like Flash and Quicktime are now loaded in a separate process. This would cause issues with the “right-click to go back” and “arrow key cursor control” features. Several users identified this as “locking up”, meaning the arrow keys no longer functioned, or they could no longer exit full screen video, etc. In 1.1.1, these issues have been resolved.

Other changes:
- Settings
Some layout changes.
Privacy tab - you can now delete history separately from cache, cookies, etc.
Controls tab - YOU CAN NOW TURN OFF THE “RIGHT-CLICK TO GO BACK” FEATURE!!!
Display tab - Setting the default zoom no longer affects the “about:” pages (ie. settings, about, help, etc.)
Advanced tab:
- You can choose to override web page titles with the values you enter in bookmarks. For instance, if you create a bookmark for facebook.com with a title of “My Facebook”, then “My Facebook” will display in the title bar instead of the default page title.
- You can now choose whether plugins like flash and quicktime run in separate processes. You can adjust this setting if you feel computer is acting slow while Kylo is running flash and your task manager reports “plugin-container.exe” as being a possible culprit

- Zoom
Zoom settings should now properly save per domain, and the saved settings should apply immediately as the page loads. This should let you do things like keep Facebook at 125% while YouTube remains at 100%

- Debug/Screen sizes
Kylo can now be run with a command line parameter of “-debug”. This will activate special keyboard shortcuts which allow you to take further control of window size and management. Ctrl+F6 brings up a dialog to let you select a custom window size or select from a few defaults and Ctrl+F11 puts Kylo in windowed mode so you can drag and maximize to the window you want.

- Other common gripes:
- If you set a custom home page, the “home page selection dialog” no longer pops up when you hit the home button on the control bar!!!! You just go straight to your custom home page! How crazy!
- The Escape key now closes most dialog panels, include the keyboard
- The included version of Flash is now 11.3, it also looks like Adobe cleaned up their act and put 32bit and 64bit versions in the same installer, this should fix some people’s issues with the included version of Flash “not being the right one”.
- The Windows Media Player plugin (technically the Firefox version) is now included with Kylo.

Our first open source release!

For the Geeks, the big change here is we’ve upgraded to Gecko 12.0. This matches with the current Firefox release. Of course, Firefox is still on their rapid release cycle, so they will probably be on v13 or so by the time I finish posting this…

Major Fixes:
* A lot of issues with Flash and Silverlight should be fixed.
There were bugs about YouTube.com/XL showing black screens and other video player controls not being clickable.

* A little more support for sub-720 resolutions
We had people whose primary screens were around 800x600. The Kylo UI didn’t take kindly to that small of a screen and the right hand side would get cut off. This includes the power menu button, which is how you get to settings… so you couldn’t change to the second monitor… yikes. Now, everything should fit in 800x600 screens.

* Keyboard shortcuts:
ctrl+u -> start/stop arrow keys controlling the cursor. Handy for when you start typing with a keyboard and hitting enter is performing mouse clicks. This is a good shortcut to map to an unused button on your remote.

ctrl+o -> go to settings screens. Extra backup in case you’re unable to get to the settings menu for any reason.

Kylo 1.0.1 released

Version 1.0.1.76141 is now available for automatic updates. This is a stability release to address issues that appeared in Kylo 1.0 and earlier.

Multiple users reported that their bookmarks disappeared after the 1.0 release. The problem was due to a bug that prevented the bookmarks screen from fully loading, which had the effect of making the screen appear empty. In reality, the bookmarks were still in the user’s database. This issue has been resolved, but if users attempted to fix the problem themselves by recreating bookmarks, or doing a complete uninstall and reinstall, the missing bookmarks will not be restored. We’re terribly sorry for the inconvenience.

Several issues dealt with the page saving feature that was introduced in Kylo 1.0. Because pages (“tabs” in Firefox, Chrome, etc.) were automatically saved across restarts without prompting the user, this caused some confusion. In addition, because saved pages were launched beneath the user’s homepage (typically the Kylo directory: connect.kylo.tv), this feature wasn’t terribly obvious. Issues arose especially in the case when the pages saved included music or video content - which caused phantom audio while browsing. To remedy this, the page saving feature is now an option in settings (and turned OFF by default). In addition, when pages are restored on relaunch, the last viewed page is in focus. This won’t entirely prevent the phantom audio issue, but at least it will help avoid unintentional saving of pages with audio content.

Keyboard shortcuts are now more robust. This is most evident in the Mac release, where the shortcuts were tied to the control key, instead of the command key.

Several other stability issues were addressed as well.

Kylo 1.0 Released

The 1.0 release of Kylo was made official on August 30th, 2011. Kylo is officially out of “Beta” status.

New features in this release include:
- An upgrade to a newer version of the Gecko runtime issue, resulting in greater website compatibility and faster JavaScript running
- A 1080p mode with graphics customized for use on higher resolution televisions
- Improved keyboard shortcut support

Along with a number of bug fixes and other enhancements.

As of 9/7 we have received some bug reports from the field which might occasion a point release to the product, unfortunately. If you have experienced issues, please post them here in our Technical Support forum. We’ll update this space with details about future releases as decisions are made.

With this release of Kylo we have included behind-the-scenes changes which will make it easier for us to insert language translations and alternate graphic themes. More details of these are forthcoming, but if you’re interested in volunteering translation assistance or updated skins for Kylo, please post in the appropriate forum area to let us know.

Kylo 0.8.4 Beta Released

We have released a small update to Kylo version 0.8.3. The update consists of a single bug fix which resolves issues that arise when using Kylo at a screen resolution of 1024x768. More details about this bug can be found at the forum thread below.

Current Kylo users will be prompted to download the new version, but most users will see no difference in the browser save for the identifier on the About screen.

Kylo 0.8 Beta Released

The 0.8 version of the Kylo TV Browser has just been released. Users of Kylo should be automatically prompted to download the new version, while all others can obtain it at http://www.kylo.tv.

The newest version of Kylo features:
- An all-new look and feel, with updated graphics and controls
- Close integration with the Clicker.tv visual search engine. Instantly find television shows, movies and video clips matching your search request.
- Better integration with Windows Media Center, including basic support for Windows Media Center remote controls
- Much better bookmark management
- A continually updating Directory of links, including (for the first time) a specialized version for UK users

We’ve made a couple of changes on the Kylo Directory. If you haven’t used Kylo in a little while, load it up and check out the new links. Scroll to the bottom of the directory to see the newest content.

Jinni: Powered by the Movie Genome, Jinni is movie search engine that’s based on your preferences. Great for Netflix users.

Channels.com: One of the biggest aggregators of video podcasts on the web.

DragOnTape: Do you remember mixtapes? DragOnTape is a simple, powerful way to make video mixtapes from other online video sources. Once you’ve made them, you can easily share with your friends.

We’ve also tweaked the directory code so now those of you using higher resolutions and bigger TVs can make the best use of the screen. No more giant black area at the bottom.

For World Cup fans, we’ve added links to both FIFA (for match commentary and highlights) and Univision (to watch the games live). Univision broadcasts are in Spanish, of course, but are freely available at least to US users.
